The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said on Tuesday that the military had requested the mobilization of an additional 450,000 to 500,000 people for the Army, but a final decision had not been made.
The Ukrainian leader said at a press conference in Kiev that top military and government officials would discuss “this very sensitive issue of mobilization” and that Parliament would consider it afterward.
Zelenskiy said that carrying out such a large-scale mobilization would require additional funding.
“Their opinion was… they proposed the mobilization of an additional 450,000 to 500,000 people. That’s a very serious number,” Zelenskiy said.
“I said that I would need more arguments to support this measure. Because, first of all, it’s a matter of people, secondly, it’s a matter of justice, it’s a matter of defense capability, and it’s a matter of finances.”
Zelenskiy said that an additional funding of 500 billion hryvnias (around USD 13.5 billion) would be needed to support the mobilization if the decision was made.
Former Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said last summer that about 1 million people were involved in Ukraine’s security and defense sector.
