The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, will begin a national tour in January focused on the right to abortion, at a time when the Democratic Party is trying to use a topic that has proven to be a vote-getter at the ballot box to their advantage.
Called “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms,” the series of trips will have events across the country, showcasing Americans impacted by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the famous Roe Vs. Wade case last year, which eliminated the right to legal abortion nationwide.
Kamala’s office said Monday that the circuit will begin with an event in the state of Wisconsin on January 22nd, the 51st anniversary of the Roe case decision.
“Extremists in our country continue to launch strong attacks against hard-won freedoms, because of their radical views, ranging from banning abortion in all 50 states and criminalizing doctors to forcing women to travel to other states to get the treatment they need,” said the Vice President in a statement.
President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign and groups aligned with the Democrats want to put the right to abortion at the center of next year’s election.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the right to abortion was a moment of triumph for conservatives, but the decision also became a politically sensitive point for Republicans.
Since 2022, all seven regional electoral referendums on reproductive rights held in the states have ended with victories for abortion rights supporters, including in conservative places like Ohio, Kansas, and Kentucky.
Voters’ reaction to the elimination of the right to abortion has also been cited as one of the causes of limited Republican success in the 2022 parliamentary elections, as well as giving victories to Democrats in Virginia and Kentucky in November.
