Chery’s plans to establish itself in the European market are going full steam ahead, now that the Chinese brand has purchased the former Nissan factory in Barcelona, Spain.
The unit, closed in 2021, will now be Chery’s first factory on the continent, and already has a potential investment of 400 million, enabling the supply of models in the region. Made in partnership with the Spanish company EV Motors, operations are expected to begin in the coming months.
According to Chery’s Executive Vice President, Guibing Zhang, the plans are optimistic. “Once we reach a sufficient scale, we will export to the rest of Europe and other countries, turning the factory into one of Chery’s main export facilities worldwide.”
The information comes from Reuters.Jaecoo/DivulgationExpected to employ up to 1,250 workers, as well as take advantage of a good number of former Nissan employees, the factory will soon start producing the Omoda 5 SUV, both the combustion and electric models.
Subsequently, another SUV, the Jaecoo 7, will also be produced there. The plans envisage an annual production of 150,000 vehicles by 2029.Therefore, with local production, it will be easier for Chery’s brands to supply models to the market, as well as avoid economic sanctions or even new customs duties, for example.
The purchase of the factory received special attention from the Spanish government. This is due to the need to replace some of the 1,600 jobs lost in 2021 due to the closure of Nissan’s factory in the country.
The unit produced models such as the Frontier pickup and its Renault Alaskan and Mercedes-Benz X-Class siblings, as well as the NV200 van, for example.
