During an interview at the sidelines of the COP29 talks in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Behar emphasized the unwavering support of the U.S. as Israel’s “strongest ally and closest friend,” reiterating that this relationship remains steadfast regardless of changes in presidential administrations or political parties in power.
Under Joe Biden’s administration, the U.S. has stood by Israel in its yearlong conflict in Gaza, a response to a violent attack by Hamas militants against Israel in October 2023, as well as in confrontations with Iran and its allies in the Middle East. Former President Trump has also pledged continued backing for Israel.
Ambassador Behar highlighted the economic opportunities that clean technologies such as desalination, renewable energy, and water conservation in agriculture present for cooperation between Israel and the U.S. “The potential for collaboration in these areas is enormous, offering great prospects for businesspeople from both countries,” noted the Israeli representative.
Behar underscored that Israel saw the discussions in Baku as a chance to engage with partners from the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East on bolstering the region’s resilience against the impacts of climate change. Despite ongoing conflicts, he expressed optimism about the progress of these dialogues.
“Our participation in this forum sends a significant message that, despite the challenges facing Israel, including ongoing conflicts, we remain an active member of the global community,” Behar remarked.
